The selections are interwoven, mainly to show the impact of the scientific and medical topics present in the science writings on the literary and poetic works included. It is chosen and arranged with brilliance. It covers the mathematical and physical sciences, the bio|About the Author|Laura Otis was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her interdisciplinary studies of the nervous system, and is currently working at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin.

Although we are used to thinking of science and the humanities as separate disciplines, in the nineteenth century this division was not recognized.
